DIP Hosts United Airlines Visit in NASA/FAA North Texas Research Station (NTX), Fort Worth

September 8, 2023

The DIP Team hosted United Airlines at NASA’s NTX facility to demonstrate the Collaborative Digital Departure Reroute (CDDR) capability and discussed United Airlines’ participation in the SFNP-Ops 1a Demo in North Texas. The CDDR operational evaluation in North Texas is the first in a series of demonstrations that the DIP Team is conducting in support of NASA’s SFNP mission. United Airlines representatives of the Flow Evaluation Team (FET) provided an update on FET tasks. The United team also visited American Airlines (AAL) Integrated Operations Center (IOC) and had fruitful exchanges with AAL’s representatives about improving the efficiency of operations.

DIP Meets with FAA Houston ATC Facilities Leadership

September 25-26, 2023

DIP Team kicked off its engagement with FAA ANG, NATCA and FAA ATC facilities in Houston and discussed initial plans to demonstrate the CDDR capability with IAH, HOU, I90 and ZHU and participating airlines partners for the SFNP-Ops-1b demonstration. Members of the DIP Team conducted observations at the ATC facilities and United Airlines IAH Station Operations Center (SOC) for 3 hrs. Monthly observations of Houston ATC facilities will continue until January 2024.

DIP Visits United Airlines’ Arlington Heights Network Operations Center

October 26, 2023

The DIP Team visited United Airlines NOC to observe operation and learn about positions that may be engaged during the demonstration of the CDDR capability in Houston, Texas. The CDDR operational evaluation in Houston is the second in a series of demonstrations that the DIP Team is conducting in support of NASA’s SFNP mission. After a round of observations, the United and NASA teams discussed near-term plans and how the NASA capability could be integrated with United’s operation.

DIP OUTREACH ACTIVITIES

DIP Attends NATCA Communicating for Safety Conference in Las Vegas

September 18-20, 2023

DIP members attended the NATCA Communicating For Safety (CFS) conference and showcased CDDR in real-time at the NASA booth. The team had exchanges about the potential use of the CDDR tool to improve operations with an emphasis towards environmental benefits including reduced fuel burn and CO2 emissions with a diverse audience, such as Flight Operators, NATCA representatives, FAA representatives, vendors, and academia.

DIP Attends ATCA Global Conference & Expo in Washington, DC

November 1-3, 2023

The DIP team showcased the CDDR tool at the NASA booth. The team also introduced the DIP platform and services to members of the aviation community. Many visitors expressed interests in accessing NASA services, such as the Fuser streaming and prediction services, as well as NASA’s vision to tech transfer the platform and services.

SOFTWARE DEVELOPMENT

The DIP team plans to roll out public access to NASA services on the DIP Platform in an incremental fashion through the Spring of 2024. Public access will enable academic research groups and organizations supporting the aviation community to benefit from consuming NASA services such as Fuser, Traffic Management Initiatives (TMI), and Machine Learning based predictive services.

ADDITIONAL SERVICES INFORMATION

The Flight Summary SFTP Service

Secure File Transfer Protocol-like (SFTP) Service via Amazon Web Services. Provides access to data report files the next day of operations around noon Eastern time. Files are organized by day and by airport. Data is available for KCLT operations from May 2019 onward and for KDFW and KDAL operations from November 2020 onward. Each row represents a flight. There are over 600 data elements for each flight. The Flight Summary Data dictionary is available upon request. Example of data of interest: Global Unique Flight Identifier, flight data, predicted and actual Out Off On and In events, predicted runways and fixes, cancellations, route updates, and TMI information, such as fix closures, Miles-In-Trail (MIT), Approval Requests (APREQ), Expected Departure Clearance Times (EDCT), and Ground Stops (GS).

The Flight Summary REST Service

REST API to query the database used to create the reports and thus enables users to specify airport, air carrier, start and end time and specific data elements of interest. DIP plans to expand the Flight Summary services to other airports in the National Airspace System (NAS) in addition to existing airports modeled by DIP predictive engine (i.e., DFW, DAL, IAH, HOU, JFK, EWR, LGA). The Flight Summary services of these new airports would not include predicted times by NASA DIP predictive engine. However, these would provide integrated and mediated data across all the System Wide Information Management (SWIM) data sources by the Fuser.

The TMI Summary SFTP Service

Secure File Transfer Protocol-like (SFTP) Service via Amazon Web Services. Provides access to data reports the next day of operations around noon Eastern time. Files are organized by day and by airspace. Data is available for KCLT, KDAL, and KDFW operations from June 2018 onward. The reports provide a summary of actual restrictions events such as fix closures, MIT, APREQ, GS, Ground Delay Programs (GDP), Airspace Flow Programs (AFP), Flow Constrained Areas (FCA) and Air Traffic Control System Command Center (DCC) reroutes advisories.

The TMI Summary REST Service

REST API to query the database used to create the TMI Summary reports and thus enables users to specify airport, start and end time and specific the restrictions of interest, such as fix closures, MIT, APREQ, GDP/AFP, GS, FCA and DCC reroutes advisories.

The Airport Configuration Prediction REST Service

REST API returns the outcome of NASA’s Machine Learning model that predicts the configuration of an airport based on traffic and weather data, up to 6 hours ahead of time. With this service, users can obtain the prediction that was made at a time X for a configuration predicted at time Y for an airport Z. For example, the service could be used to return the latest prediction of a configuration, now or in 2 hours from now. The service can also return a prediction that was made yesterday at noon for a configuration at 3pm. Data is available from current time to 30 days ago. A separate endpoint provides the ability to specify a time of prediction and obtain the result of predictions for the next 6h.

The CDDR FIXM CDM Streaming Service

Streaming pub/sub service in Flight Information eXchange Model (FIXM) format for Collaborative Decision Making (CDM) users to provide real-time alternate route information, including predicted delay savings on alternate routes, as well as the associated departure fix and runway. This service compares alternate routes to existing flight plans and accounts for alternate route availability based on TMI restrictions. The service does not include any airline sensitive information.
