Ron Davis and Andy Kogelnik: Big Data and Measurement: Ushering in a New Age in Human Health and Medicine

Synopsis:
In this talk, Dr. Davis and Dr. Kogelnik discussed advances in big data analytics as they relate to human health as driven by genomics, molecular biology, synthetic biology, sensor development, and self-quantification. The data flood that is being generated by bioengineering and genomics has only begun and will transform our views of human health and disease. Bioengineering and informatics are two areas key to enabling the large scale collection and analysis of the human condition. Crowd-sourcing such large scale data sets is accelerating rapidly and has enormous potentials for exploratory discovery and scientific inquiry. We discussed the latest in nano, micro and macro technologies and how they are being applied to yield answers to practical questions.

Andy Kogelnik, MD, PhD is a physician-scientist, bioengineer and founding Director of the Open Medicine Institute (OMI). OMI is a collaborative research institute helping to transform health care research and delivery through biotechnology and informatics. Dr. Kogelnik is a leading figure in applying science and technology to practical problems in clinical medicine across genomics, neuroscience, immunology, and informatics. He is the architect of OpenMedNet an integrative system combining biosensors; routine clinical data; biobanking; genomic and other research data; direct patient feedback through mobile and wearable sensors and social network derived data.

Ron Davis, PhD is Professor of Biochemistry at Stanford University, Director of the Stanford Genome Technology Center (SGTC) and an OMI Board member. He was a leading figure in the conception and execution of the Human Genome Project. At SGTC he has led major efforts in DNA sequencing technologies, genomics, synthetic biologic and bioengineering micro and nanosensor development. Over the past ten years he has helped spawn over a dozen companies from the SGTC. He is a member of the National Academy of Sciences and has received many awards and accolades over his career including most recently the Gruber Prize in Genetics.
