In this underwater image, three people in scuba diving gear hold rope attached to the corners of a square white frame made of PVC as they pull it to the ground. Bubbles stream from each of divers, while students in orange shirts float at the surface and watch.

Prepping the Coral Farm

Divers pull a frame filled with small pieces of coral towards the sea floor, where they will anchor it to grow for a few years before replanting that coral into damaged and dying reefs. As part of the OCEANOS (Ocean Community Engagement and Awareness using NASA Earth Observations and Science) internship, students (neon orange shirts) learn about coral reef ecology and restoration, helping to build these coral 'farms' as part of the field work section of the internship.
