Acting Associate Administrator for Communications

Wes Brown serves as the acting associate administrator for communications, ensuring that NASA’s impact is communicated both nationally and globally as the agency explores the secrets of the universe for the benefit of all.

Wes also helps ensure that NASA fulfills the National Aeronautics and Space Act of 1958. This Federal statute created NASA and states that it “provide for the widest practicable and appropriate dissemination of information concerning its activities and the results thereof.” NASA’s communications enterprise plays a critical role in the agency accomplishing this mandate.

In this capacity, Brown provides executive oversight of the enterprise’s operational and administrative functions, including strategic planning and integration, business management, and information services.

Prior to these roles, Wes held a senior staff position within the Office of Communications at NASA Headquarters. In addition to other responsibilities, Brown oversaw the business and financial management of communications operations. This work encompassed program planning and control services to ensure compliance with agency requirements, while also facilitating effective coordination with mission directorates and other mission support organizations.

Wes joined the NASA team in 1997 following his tenure with the US Army where he served in Desert Shield/Storm and Operation Uphold Democracy (Haiti). Wes entered NASA as a precision machining technician focused on the diamond turning of optics at the Space Optics Manufacturing and Technology Center at Marshall Space Flight Center. Since the early 2000’s, Wes has applied his blended knowledge of technology, business and programmatics to many NASA endeavors. From 2016 to 2023, he served as the manager of the Office of Strategy at Marshall Space Flight Center.

Wes holds an MBA from the University of Alabama at Birmingham along with undergraduate degrees in Management of Technology from Athens State University and Accounting from the University of Alabama in Huntsville.
