A series of fires began in Oregon on July 15, 2018 sparked by a spate of lightning strikes from thunderstorms that roared through the area. These resulting fires have been combined into a complex of fires called the Garner complex. They include the Taylor Creek, Grave Creek, Ditch Creek, Pleasant Creek and Spencer fires. The complex is now 11,564 acres in size and is 14% contained. Near critical fire weather conditions continue today. A persistent weather pattern of hot, dry winds 5-10 mph are predicted in the afternoons for the next several days. Low humidity may encourage very active fire behavior. Over 2,000 personnel are currently working on this fire.

NASA’s EOSDIS provides the capability to interactively browse over 600 global, full-resolution satellite imagery layers and then download the underlying data. Many of the available imagery layers are updated within three hours of observation, essentially showing the entire Earth as it looks “right now”. This natural-color satellite image was collected on July 22, 2018. Actively burning areas, detected by thermal bands, are outlined in red.
