Ancient Oak Falls in Storm
Kristyn Ecochard of NASA Langley's Science Directorate stands beside an ancient oak tree that was toppled by the severe thunderstorms

Storms that tore through much of the country the last week in January in 2013 also toppled a huge tree at NASA Langley adjacent to the parking lot of Building 1202.
Kristyn Ecochard of the Science Directorate stopped by to check out the damage the day after the storm.
Plant experts here say the huge oak may have pre-dated the establishment of NASA Langley, which started as the Langley Memorial Aeronautical Laboratory in 1917.
Fortunately the tree fell during the night in a direction where it did not hit any cars or Building 1202, which houses the Pearl Young Theater and a number of research labs.Credit: NASA/Sean Smith
