Mission: Airborne Synthetic Aperture Radar 2004 (AirSAR)
The Larsen Ice Shelf in Antarctica viewed from NASA’s DC-8 aircraft during the AirSAR 2004 campaign. The goals of the AirSAR 2004 campaign were to study the extent and distribution of archeological Mayan civilization (using foliage-penetrating radar); study the glaciers of Patagonia and the Antarctic peninsula; investigate new techniques for the measurement of the forest structure of dense tropical forests; fill in the largest “void” in the Shuttle Radar Topography Mission (SRTM)-derived map of South American topography; and collect additional data for various research initiatives.
