Title: F-111 Mission Adaptive Wing
Designer: Unknown
Year it was designed: circa 1972
Explanation or story behind the patch: The 13th service test F-111A was obtained by NASA from the U.S. Air Force through a loan agreement, signed on 3 February 1972, for use in the Transonic Aircraft Technology (TACT) program. The aircraft was subsequently retained by NASA, and used for the Natural Laminar Flow (NLF), Advanced Fighter Technology Integration (AFTI), and Mission Adaptive Wing (MAW) research programs. The MAW program demonstrated the concept of changing wing camber in flight. The airplane was transferred to the Air Force Flight Test Center Museum on 29 June 1990.This patch features a wing cross-section illustrating variable camber. Project participants included researchers from NASA Dryden, NASA Langley, Air Force Wright Aeronautical Laboratory, Air Force Flight Test Center, and Boeing.
