Abstract: Today’s shared space environment has changed from readily-characterizable environment to a highly dynamic one that is congested, contested, and competitive. Space operators now need to consider that a malicious actor, even a nation state, may attempt an attack to disrupt or destroy a space system, capability, or support system. Successful or not, many of these attacks will further threaten other systems such as in the case of new orbital debris or jamming of radios. New space systems need to be designed for resilience in face of these emerging threats. This talk provides a brief review of adversarial threats, an overview of NASA’s space protection approach, and discusses the newly-released NASA STD-1006 Space System Protection Requirements.

Biosketch: Joshua Krage joined NASA in 2001 at the Goddard Space Flight Center, where he established a leading network security monitoring and incident response capability, and went on to become the center’s Chief Information Security Officer in 2009. In 2012, the NASA Program Management Council approved the charter for the NASA Space Protection Working Group and Joshua served as a founding member for its full span. As of 2017, Joshua started directly supporting the NASA Office of Chief Engineer’s Space Asset Protection Program, and currently serves as its Acting Program Executive. Joshua enjoys dabbling in Python, is an avid consumer of science fiction and fantasy genres, and enjoys a wide variety of games.
