Phase I is the jumping off point for most small businesses and research institutions working with the program. It is known as the “idea generation” phase, during which small businesses (and their research institution partners in STTR) establish the scientific, technical, commercial merit and feasibility of the proposed innovation. Aug. 7, 2026 | 2026 NASA SBIR Appendix A Phase I
NASA selected 51 proposals from small business teams in 17 states to develop new technologies addressing agency priorities. The new awards from NASA’s Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) and Small Business Technology Transfer (STTR) program invest in a varied portfolio of American small businesses supporting NASA’s future missions with work in areas such as space power and lunar exploration. Of the companies selected, 22% are first-time NASA SBIR/STTR recipients. Each proposal team will receive $225,000 to establish the merit and feasibility of their innovations for a total agency investment of more than $11 million. NASA has chosen 121 proposals from small business teams across the U.S. to create new technologies aligned with the agency’s priorities. These awards, part of NASA’s Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) and Small Business Technology Transfer (STTR) program, fund a diverse group of American small businesses in 22 states to help advance NASA’s future missions. About 41% of the selected companies are receiving NASA SBIR/STTR funding for the first time. Each team will be awarded $225,000 to demonstrate the value and feasibility of its proposed innovation, representing a total agency investment of approximately $27 million. Their work covers areas such as navigation, hardware health assessment, and flight diagnostics. NASA has awarded 32 teams of small businesses and their research institution partners contracts to develop new technologies that align with key agency priorities in areas such as lunar exploration and very low Earth orbit operations. These selections, made through NASA’s Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) and Small Business Technology Transfer (STTR) program, fund a broad range of U.S. small businesses and research institutions to help advance future NASA missions. Roughly 41% of the selected companies are receiving NASA SBIR/STTR funding for the first time. Representing 16 different states, each team will be awarded $225,000 to assess the merit and feasibility of its proposed innovation, totaling an agency investment of about $7 million. 2026 Appendix A&B Q&A Hub
On April 17, 2026, the NASA SBIR/STTR program released the NASA SBIR/STTR Broad Agency Announcement (BAA). On April 21, 2026, the NASA SBIR/STTR program released Appendices 26A SBIR, 26B SBIR and 26B STTR. This Q&A Hub was created to answer questions before small businesses submitted their proposal and as a resource for future solicitations.
