Katherine Zeringue serves as NASA’s agency archaeologist, as well as the cultural resources manager at NASA’s Kennedy Space Center in Florida, since 2022. Zeringue oversees the center’s historic resources, from buildings to historic districts to archaeological sites.
Zeringue helps manage 83 historic buildings including the Vehicle Assembly Building, Launch Control Center, and the Neil A. Armstrong Operations and Checkout Building, plus several other structures. She also oversees seven national register districts and one national historic landmark.
Experience
Zeringue has more than 20 years of experience in historic preservation and cultural resource management, including short- and long-term planning, budgeting and contracts, and compliance with Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act.
Prior to working at NASA, Zeringue worked at the Federal Railroad Administration as a Federal Preservation Officer for four years. Zeringue also spent 12 years at FEMA (Federal Emergency Management Agency) directing the agency’s Environmental and Historic Preservation Program in Louisiana following Hurricane Katrina in August 2005. She also served as FEMA’s Environmental Officer in Washington, DC.
Awards
In 2021, Zeringue was the recipient of two Federal Railroad Administration’s (FRA) 47th annual awards including an individual Superior Achievement Award and a group FRA Achievement Award. She also received a 52nd Annual Department of Transportation Secretary’s Award in 2019, and a recipient of a FEMA Administrator’s Award in 2016.
Education
Zeringue has a master’s degree in anthropology with a specialization in historical archaeology from the College of William and Mary. She also graduated from Sweet Briar College with a Bachelor of Arts in anthropology, art history, and arts management.
Personal
Zeringue was born in New Orleans, Louisiana and has spent most of her life living and working in New Orleans and Virginia. She currently lives on Merritt Island, Florida.
Outside of work, Zeringue enjoys traveling, birding, and tending to her vegetable garden.
