NASA Celebrates 40 Years of Spinoffs

There’s more space in your life than you think. Ever since NASA’s founding in 1958, the technologies that we’ve developed to power space exploration have also found a home here on Earth.

In fact, one of NASA’s core missions is to ensure that the results of the agency’s research in space and aeronautics technologies go on to benefit all of society. Spinoffs can be found in virtually every area of the economy, from health and medicine to consumer goods and industrial productivity.

Since 1976, NASA’s annual Spinoff publication has highlighted the many ways that spinoffs from NASA technology provide practical benefits to the public. In celebration of Spinoff’s 40th year of publication, we’ve assembled 40 of the spinoffs that have had the greatest impact on Earth — whether by saving lives, becoming ubiquitous throughout industry and modern life or achieving public fame as a known NASA-derived product.
