NASA Administrator to Visit NASA IV&V Facility in Fairmont, W.Va.

NASA Administrator Charles Bolden will be visiting NASA’s Independent Verification and Validation (IV&V) Facility in Fairmont, W.Va., on Tuesday, Dec. 20. During his trip, the Administrator will be recognizing the IV&V Program for recent accomplishments and continued service to the agency. Additional visitors are expected to include Goddard Space Flight Center Director Chris Scolese, U.S. Rep. David McKinley (R-W.Va.), and U.S. Senator Joe Manchin (D-W.Va.).  Bolden, Scolese, McKinley, and Manchin are also expected to visit the West Virginia Robotic Technology Center and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Continuity of Operations Facility.

Bolden was nominated by President Barack Obama and confirmed by the U.S. Senate as the 12th Administrator of NASA in July 2009. He leads NASA employees and contractors to achieve the space agency’s vision to reach for new heights and reveal the unknown for the benefit of humanity. Bolden spent 14 years as an astronaut during which time he flew four missions aboard the space shuttle – two as a commander and two as a pilot. His missions included the first SPACELAB “mission to planet Earth” to study our atmosphere, deployment of the Hubble Space Telescope and the first joint U.S.-Russian shuttle mission, which featured a cosmonaut as a member of his crew. He spent more than 28 days in space. Bolden served the country for 34 years in the Marine Corps, retiring as a Major General. NASA’s IV&V Program provides a specialized kind of software assurance to all of NASA, ensuring the most important software on NASA’s highest profile missions will operate correctly.  The IV&V Program supported the recently launched GOES-R and OSIRIS-REx missions and continues to support more than a dozen NASA missions.

Administrator Bolden will be available to speak to the media during the visit.  For more information about this opportunity, contact Jeff Northey at Jeffrey.R.Northey@nasa.gov
