On Nov. 28, 1964, NASA launched Mariner 4 en route to the Red Planet. The spacecraft flew past Mars on July 14, 1965, collecting the first close-up photographs of another planet. Since then, NASA has placed several spacecraft on the surface of Mars, as well as several orbital missions.
