Black-and-white mosaic of the Moon’s South Pole showing a densely cratered landscape viewed from above. Circular grid lines and crosshairs overlay the image, with the lunar pole located at the center. Large and small craters cover the region, with deep shadows visible inside many crater walls and basins.

Lunar South Pole Mosaic

This mosaic of the Moon’s South Pole was created using images captured by the Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter Camera (LROC). As the spacecraft passed over the lunar pole every two hours, images were collected over the course of a month to build a complete view of the region from 80° south latitude to the pole. The mosaic contains 288 images, and subtle changes in lighting can be seen where the month-long imaging period began and ended.
