In this underwater image, a line of students a ways from the camera swim along the surface of the water, wearing neon orange long sleeves, fins, and snorkels. In the foreground, black Z-shaped instruments dangle down from a small yellow floatation buoy at the surface. The photo is majority bright blue: the surface, the water, and the sea floor.

Underwater Sensors

Low-cost water quality sensors dangle in the waters off of Punta Soldado, Culebra (Puerto Rico), during the fieldwork section of NASA's OCEANOS internship. During the program, students build their own sensors to measure light and temperature, which will tell them about overall water quality.
