In the Smoke

Wildland fire manager Daniel Gualtieri stands in the blacked area after a prescribed burn in Fort Stewart-Hunter Army Airfield in Georgia. These prescribed burns are ecologically necessary for the plants and animals in the longleaf pine ecosystem, and reduce fuels that could be accidentally ignited due to lighting strikes or military training operations. Gualtieri is a member of the Integrated Research Management Team (IRMT), which helped coordinate ground logistics and safety measures for the complex research campaign.
