A huge crane lifted the drive motor out of NASA Langley’s 14-by 22-Foot Subsonic Wind Tunnel, after it had removed the top of the tunnel to gain access.

The top of the tunnel can be seen on the orange-trussed platform in the lower right portion of the photo.

The motor, which drives the tunnel’s blades, is being shipped off for repairs after it experienced an electrical short. Engineers say it will be fixed, returned, then re-installed in the tunnel and tested to make sure its is fully operational.

The 14- by 22-Foot Subsonic Wind tunnel is expected to be up and running again this fall.
