Title: X-31 (worm logo)
Designer: Unknown
Year it was designed: circa 1988
Explanation or story behind the patch: In the early to mid-1980’s there was a strong technology push to understand the capabilities possible for high performance tactical aircraft using high angles of attack for enhanced fighter capability. There were at least five projects (using at least four airframes) in the US alone. One of the crown jewels of that time was the X-31A Enhanced Fighter Maneuverability program. The X-31A was designed to demonstrate and provide research and test data to show the tactical maneuvering improvements of a high agility tactical aircraft. Partners included DARPA, the US Navy, DASA (German), Rockwell, and NASA.
