Patch: Drones for Aerodynamic and Structural Testing (DAST)

Title: Drones for Aerodynamic and Structural Testing

Designer: Unknown

Year it was designed: circa 1975

Explanation or story behind the patch: In the Drones for Aerodynamic and Structural Testing (DAST) program, NASA researchers modified BQM-34F Firebee II drones as remotely piloted research vehicles. They were flown in the transonic speed range to gather data on aerodynamic loads and active flutter control systems on wings with supercritical airfoils. A total of 18 flights (11 captive and 7 free) were conducted in several configurations between November 1975 and June 1983. Two DAST research vehicles were lost to accidents during the course of the program. The patch features a stylized DAST logo and recognizes the joint participation of researchers from Langley Research Center and Dryden.
