Explanation or story behind the patch: As Operations Engineers, we play a leading role in transitioning research in the lab to flight while maintaining airworthiness and striving for mission success. This is best summarized by our patch slogan: “Taking Concepts to Flight”. Other characteristics further emphasize our core roles and associated responsibilities. The three planes represent flight operations in aeronautics research, airborne science, and exploration involving manned and unmanned aircraft systems of which our branch leads and supports. The gear highlights our engineering contribution to airworthiness and mission success. The color blue signifies the sky (flight operations) and security (airworthiness). The color red signifies strength (sound engineering judgment). The color white signifies a blank canvas (a tribute to new beginnings and exploring the unexplored).
