Late afternoon clouds and interior LED lighting highlight the front of the new Facilities Support Center at NASA’s Dryden Flight Research Center at dusk. The entire 38,000-square-foot structure is lit by light-emitting diode fixtures, which consume only a tiny fraction of the electricity used by conventional florescent lights. The structure was designed to meet the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) new construction platinum certification for environment and energy efficiency. NASA facilities engineers forecast that energy consumption will be reduced about 36 percent over conventional construction.
