The Goldstone Solar System Radar (GSSR) program was officially established. Throughout the 1960’s and 1970’s, scientists had been performing scientific observations at an ad hoc basis using the 64 meter antenna (Deep Space Station 14) on nearby asteroids, the surfaces of Venus, Mars, and other objects in the solar system. Throughout the 1960’s, scientists were able to schedule a lot of time on the antenna. But as the number of spacecraft supported by the Deep Space Network (DSN) grew in the 1970’s, the amount of radar time on the antenna, declined.
