A probe for the MASC (Microwave Atmospheric Sounder for Cubesats) instrument is mounted on the DC-8’s left wing. The instrument is considered a “piggyback experiment” that is studying some of the same phenomena that the Convective Processes Experiment (CPEX) payload is observing. This experimental instrument will test the possibility of flying a miniaturized microwave radiometer on a tiny satellite called a Cubesat. JPL scientists will assess MASC’s performance in CPEX to advance the instrument along the path to space readiness.
