The Hybrid Thermally Efficient Core (HyTEC) project seeks to develop a portfolio of technologies that contribute to raising the pressure, temperature, and efficiency of turbofan engine cores. Higher efficiency cores will be needed to supply turbofan engines that can provide the same amount of thrust with less energy.

HyTEC’s compact, highly efficient, power-dense core and power extraction technology will provide direct benefits to the next single-aisle class aircraft.

These technologies will provide substantial continuous fuel burn reductions during the aircraft life cycle. These advances will open the door for cost benefits for commercial aviation while reducing adverse impacts to society.

HyTEC’s technology portfolio includes:

  • High Pressure Compressor – Casing treatments and advanced designs to enable operability with optimized efficiency and performance
  • Enhanced Combustor Materials – Ceramic matrix composite (CMC) liners for combustors to increase performance and durability
  • High Temperature Turbine Materials – CMCs/environmental barrier coatings (EBCs) for turbine blades and vanes to increase temperatures and efficiency
  • Advanced High-Pressure Turbine Aerodynamics – Enable more efficient turbine operation by developing advanced blade and cooling designs and aerodynamic features
  • High Pressure and Low Pressure Turbine – Power extraction to enable more electric airplane systems

HyTEC is accelerating these technologies through the following partnerships with industry to enable technology transfer for the next single-aisle aircraft engine.

  • High Pressure Compressor/ GE Aviation
  • High Pressure Turbine Advanced Aerodynamics/ GE Aviation
  • High Pressure Turbine Advanced Aerodynamics/ Pratt & Whitney
  • High Temperature EBCs/ GE Aviation
  • Ceramic Matrix Composite and EBCs/ Pratt & Whitney
  • Ceramic Matrix Composite Combustor Liner/ GE Aviation
  • Turbofan Engine Power Extraction Demonstration/ GE Aviation
  • Ceramic Matric Composite Turbine Blade Durability Enhancement/ GE Aviation
