Spacelab, a lab that fit inside the space shuttle payload bay, launched on its first mission on Nov. 28, 1983. On board the shuttle were STS-9 Commander John W. Young, Pilot Brewster H. Shaw Jr., Mission Specialists Owen K. Garriott, Robert A. R. Parker and Payload Specialists Byron K. Lichtenberg and Ulf Merbold of the European Space Agency.

Spacelab, a lab that fit inside the space shuttle payload bay, launched on its first mission, STS-9, on Nov. 28, 1983. Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville, Alabama, managed Spacelab and worked closely with the European Space Agency, which built the hardware.
