With over 8700 different chemicals used in industry; many of which are hazardous materials (HAZMAT), the Department of Transportation (DOT) estimates there are over 800,000 HAZMAT shipments every day. To aid in the safe delivery of HAZMAT shipments, HAZMAT required to complete the 49 CFR Department of Transportation (DOT) Hazardous Materials (HAZMAT) course every three years.
White Sands Test Facility offer both initial 3-day and recurrent 1-day training that fulfills the requirements for employer responsibility to ensure that NASA’s HAZMAT employee(s) are trained in accordance with 49CFR §172.704 and the Hazardous Material Regulations.

Target Audience (NASA Government and Contractor Employees Only)

HAZMAT employees are individuals, employed on a full time, part time, or temporary basis by a hazmat employer, or who are self-employed, who during the course of employment:

  • Loads, unloads, or handles HAZMAT,
  • Designs, manufactures, fabricates, inspects marks, maintains, reconditions, repairs, or tests a package, container or packaging component that is represented, marked, certified, or sold as qualified for use in transporting HAZMAT in commerce,
  • Prepares HAZMAT for transportation,
  • Is responsible for safety of transporting HAZMAT,  and
  • Operates a vehicle used to transport HAZMAT.

Requirements in the Hazardous Material Regulations apply to each person who offers HAZMAT for transportation in commerce, causes  HAZMAT to be transported in commerce, or transports HAZMAT in commerce and who performs or is responsible for performing a pre-transportation function, including each person performing pre-transportation functions under contract with any department, agency, or instrumentality of the executive, legislative, or judicial branch of the Federal government.
