NASA is accepting public comment on a supplemental environmental assessment developed in response to a SpaceX request to lease and develop an area near the company’s current operational facility at the agency’s Kennedy Space Center in Florida.

The SpaceX proposal requests expanding the area on Roberts Road near its existing facilities, allowing the company to conduct a majority of its Cape Canaveral-based operations in one location at Kennedy.

“This public comment period is part of a comprehensive environmental review process required under the National Environmental Policy Act,” said Don Dankert, technical lead for the Kennedy Environmental Planning Office.

In 2018, NASA issued a Finding of No Significant Impact, which enabled construction of SpaceX’s existing facilities at Roberts Road. The supplemental environmental assessment considers the lease of an additional 100 acres and construction of additional buildings and parking.

SpaceX’s proposal also calls for a utility upgrade in the area, including fiber communications, electricity, water, and wastewater. Also proposed is a widening of Saturn Causeway from the Vehicle Assembly Building to Phillips Parkway to support vehicle transport from Roberts Road to Kennedy’s launch facilities.

NASA will be accepting public input on the supplemental environmental assessment through October 16, 2023 at https://public.ksc.nasa.gov/environmental/robertsroadexpansion.
