On April 22, 2011, S. Hing the Flight Project/Experiment Support Manager for the Human Research Program Treadmill Kinematic Experiment began monitoring the first of 36 on orbit experiment sessions from the Multi Mission Operations Center at Ames. This monitoring will continue through June of 2012 or until all subjects have completed the required on-orbit experiment session. The Treadmill Kinematics experiment performs quantitative biomechanical analysis on astronaut exercise using the second-generation treadmill (T2) aboard the International Space Station. The Principal Investigator, Dr. John De Witt (JSC/Wyle), will compare gait motion and joint and muscle loading in-flight to that determined for the ground. Understanding these mechanisms will allow the enhanced development of appropriate exercise prescriptions. Treadmill Kinematics is a peer-reviewed experiment sponsored by NASA’s Johnson Space Center and managed by the Ames Flight Systems Implementation Branch.
