An Artistic View of the TTBW

Artist concept of the Transonic Truss-Braced Wing.
NASA / Craig Hunter

Though the image above could easily be mistaken as a piece in an art exhibition, it is actually a digital rendering of the Transonic Truss-Braced Wing (TTBW) concept. Created using data from a recent simulation using computational fluid dynamics, this image shows the concept aircraft’s aerodynamic properties. On the airplane itself, the red and violet colors show areas of higher drag, and the green and blue show areas of lower drag. The triangular, pyramid-looking “cells” represent airflow around the aircraft, helping scientists understand the vehicle’s aerodynamics and improve its efficiency. Aircraft concepts like the TTBW are part of an initiative by NASA and industry partners to make aviation cleaner and more sustainable – in this case, by creating less drag and burning less fuel.
