Overhead satellite mosaic showing Mons Rümker, a large, rounded volcanic mound on the Moon's surface surrounded by flat, dark lunar plains. The terrain is marked with impact craters of various sizes, with sharp sunlight casting deep, dark shadows along crater rims and the bumpy, elevated boundaries of the volcanic feature.

Zonal (u) and meridional (v) wind forecast evolution using the Spectral-LS model, for a test sample from Mars Year 35 at Ls = 71.7° (northern spring). Each column shows a different forecast lead time from +2h to +24h. For each variable, the top row shows the model prediction and the bottom row shows the corresponding ground truth from OpenMARS reanalysis. The model captures the large-scale zonal jet structure and meridional circulation patterns throughout the 24-hour rollout, with errors growing gradually at smaller spatial scales. Grid resolution is 5° × 5° (36 × 72).

On June 22, 2013, the Operational Land Imager (OLI) on Landsat 8 captured this false-color image of the East Peak fire burning in southern Colorado near Trinidad. Burned areas appear dark red, while actively burning areas look orange. Dark green areas are forests; light green areas are grasslands. Data from Landsat 8 were used to train the Prithvi artificial intelligence model, which can help detect burn scars.

Expanded AI Model with Global Data Enhances Earth Science Applications

The Surya Heliophysics Foundation Model collaborative team met for a two day Project Kick Off Meeting hosted by the NASA ODSI IMPACT AI team on October 2 and 3, 2024 in Huntsville, Alabama at the University of Alabama in Huntsville’s National Space Science and Technology Center (NSSTC). At the meeting, the team discussed plans for the architecture of the model, the science behind it, and specific use cases thought to be most helpful to the heliophysics community.

This side-by-side view of Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) images depict land use change in a region in Western Brazil between 2016 and 2024. High NDVI values in green indicate healthy vegetation and lower NDVI values in tan and brown correspond to soil or barren areas.

NASA image acquired May 1, 2010. As an active region rotated into view, it blew out three relatively small eruptions over about two days (Apr. 30 - May 2) as STEREO (Ahead) observed in extreme UV light. The first one was the largest and exhibited a pronounced twisting motion (shown in the still from May 1, 2010). The plasma, not far above the Sun's surface in these images, is ionized Helium heated to about 60,000 degrees. Note, too, the movement of plasma flowing along magnetic field lines that extend out beyond and loop back into the Sun's surface. Such activity occurs every day and is part of the dynamism of the changing Sun.
