ASSET’s Objectives
Objective #1: Maturation of mission concepts, instrumentation and enabling technology for planetary applications. Near-term focus is on applications for Moon to Mars exploration, comet/asteroid sample return, ocean world habitability, and giant planet atmospheres.
Objective #2: Advance technology, instrumentation and mission concepts to characterize, enable, and safeguard exploration.
Objective #3: Mature, miniaturize, and fill gap areas of instrumentation designed for single and multi-point remote and in situ observations to advance predictions of solar drivers.
Objective #4: Advance space weather modeling through system-of-system approach and digital missions.
Objective #5: Invest in next-generation technologies.
Main GOals
Goal #1:
Enable exploration by targeting key measurements and needed systems that support:
1. Operations, domain awareness, and resource identification/utilization
2. Environmental and radiation safety
3. Innovation necessary to understand planetary environments and the support of life
4. Exploration of unexplored solar system targets
Goal #2:
Safeguard exploration by advancing space weather nowcasting/forecasting through coordinated, distributed measurements of the sun and heliosphere including:
1.Comprehensive, high-resolution observations of solar activity and its connection to planetary environments
2.System-of-system models and data assimilation that improve space weather prediction
Goal #3:
Protect Earth by identifying, characterizing, and mitigating threats from potentially hazardous objects (planetary defense).
