NASA INDEPENDENT VERIFICATION AND VALIDATION (IV&V) PROGRAM AND ASTRONAUT PAUL LOCKHART TO HOST CAREER WORKSHOP FOR HIGH SCHOOL SOPHOMORES
FAIRMONT, W.Va. –NASA’s Independent Verification and Validation, or IV&V, Program will conduct a career workshop for 225 high school sophomores at the Center for Scientific Research in the High Technology Park in Fairmont on Friday, Nov. 19.
The event known as Careers in the Corridor is an IV&V student outreach program that supports NASA’s mission to motivate and engage students in the pursuit of academic and professional careers in science, technology, engineering and math.
The event will begin at 9:00 a.m., with a presentation by former astronaut Paul Lockhart. Lockhart became an astronaut in 1996 and has logged over 5,000 hours in more than 30 different aircraft and the Space Shuttle. He also served NASA as special assistant, program management, explorations systems mission directorate at NASA headquarters, and as acting division director, Constellation Systems Division. Lockhart now works in the private sector where he is the senior vice president for QinetiQ North America.
Jess White, lead of STEM Initiatives at IV&V said “Students will learn about a variety of careers, from what it takes to become an astronaut to what it takes to be hired for great jobs in the I-79 High Tech Corridor. Representatives of NASA and 11 area companies and organizations will help the students look ahead at the courses they should begin or continue to pursue to prepare themselves for the world of opportunity they can find in our own state.”
“Careers in the Corridor is meant to encourage tenth grade students to stay engaged in their studies and imagine their future with us. Outreach to students and educators is one of NASA’s core missions and is necessary to ‘grow’ the next generation of scientists, engineers, mathematicians and technology experts in our own communities. For many years IV&V has been fulfilling that mission with students from pre-school to post doctorate programs,” said Greg Blaney, IV&V’s acting director.
The IV&V program provides software verification and validation services, as well as software safety assurance support for the agency’s most critical missions.
