NASA Glenn Hosts “State of NASA” Media Event Feb. 12

NASA’s Glenn Research Center in Cleveland will open its doors to media representatives on Monday, Feb. 12, from 1 to 4:30 p.m. EST for a “State of NASA” event featuring a behind-the-scenes look at the center’s work in developing the next generation of aircraft and advancing NASA’s mission to send astronauts into deep space.

The Hall thruster is part of an SEP system that uses 10 times less propellant than equivalent chemical rockets.
Engineers at NASA’s Glenn Research Center are advancing the propulsion system that will propel the first ever mission to redirect an asteroid for astronauts to explore in the 2020s. NASA’s Asteroid Redirect Mission will test a number of new capabilities, like advanced Solar Electric Propulsion (SEP), needed for future astronaut expeditions into deep space, including to Mars. Media attending the event will watch NASA Acting Administrator Robert Lightfoot deliver a State of NASA address at 1 p.m. EST via NASA Television. Lightfoot will address the progress made and the exciting work ahead on the agency’s exploration initiative that secures America’s leadership in space.

Glenn Center Director Janet Kavandi and Chief Financial Officer Larry Sivic will discuss Glenn’s role in the nation’s aeronautics and space exploration program as well as the center’s proposed fiscal year 2019 budget. A short question and answer session with Kavandi and Sivic will follow.

The event will include media tours of the Electric Propulsion Lab, where we simulate the far reaches of space, and the 8-foot by 6-foot Supersonic Wind Tunnel, where Glenn engineers are working to design and test quiet supersonic aircraft concepts.

Media representatives who want to attend the activities should contact Jan Wittry at 216-870-0348 or jan.m.wittry-1@nasa.gov, by 2 p.m. Feb. 9. Media need to arrive at Glenn’s Main Gate located off of Brookpark Road no later than 12:40 p.m. for the Monday event.

At 5 p.m. Monday, NASA Acting Chief Financial Officer Andrew Hunter will brief media on the agency’s 2019 budget proposal. To participate in this briefing, media must contact Karen Northon in the NASA Headquarters newsroom at 202-358-1540 or karen.northon@nasa.gov no later than 4 p.m. Monday. Media in attendance at Glenn will have the option to listen to the teleconference.
