Dr. David Ewins – NESC Academy Biography
David Ewins studied Mechanical Engineering at Imperial College and then undertook PhD research at Cambridge University. He was appointed Professor of Vibration Engineering at Imperial in 1983 and set up the Centre of Vibration Engineering in 1990 with support from Rolls-Royce. He has held Visiting Professor appointments in France, Switzerland, USA and Singapore, where he was Temasek Professor from 1999 to 2002. He served as Pro Rector (International Relations) at Imperial College from 2001 until 2005. (http://www.imperial.ac.uk/people/d.ewins).
David is a Fellow of the Royal Society (FRS) and a Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering (FREng).
David’s awards and his work in modal analysis and testing are well known. However, he has also made pioneering contributions in the understanding of vibration of rotating machinery. Specifically, David was one of the first researchers to contribute to the area of “mistuning”, which is a mode localization phenomena of bladed-discs. His work was vital to industry, especially Rolls-Royce, for developing design/analysis methods to aid in preventing excessive vibrations in turbomachinery.
