Classroom Coding Challenges

The following individual coding challenges can be completed in one to two classroom days. To complete these activities, students will need access to a block code platform. In these challenges, Code.org’s “App Lab” is used as an example, however, any block code platform can be utilized.

ADC Artemis 1 Lunar Coding Challenge

The Lunar Coding Challenge asks students to utilize block code to design the Artemis I mission. Launched November 16, 2022, Artemis I was the first in a series of increasing complex missions in the Artemis program to enable human exploration at the Moon and future missions to Mars.

Students will need access to a block coding platform to complete the challenge. The guide below utilizes Code.org’s “App Lab” (https://code.org/educate/applab) as an example; however, students may use any block coding platform.

The challenge allows students to pick one of three different avatars of the Orion spacecraft.

The files below contain all the resources needed to complete the challenge.

ADC Artemis II Coding Challenge

The Artemis II Coding Challenge asks students to utilize block code to design the Artemis II mission. Artemis II is scheduled to launch no earlier than November 2024 and is the first crewed mission on NASA’s path to establishing a long-term presence at the Moon for science and exploration through Artemis. The activity will allow students to learn about the crew members, liftoff into space and splashdown in the Pacific Ocean. To complete this coding challenge, students will need to access a block code platform. In this guide, Code.org’s “App Lab” is used as an example to follow along.
