Associate Director, Engineering Directorate

Tommy Mack is the associate director of the Engineering Directorate at NASA’s Kennedy Space Center in Florida. He leads a large multi-discipline organization in providing engineering products and services to several NASA customers, including the International Space Station, Commercial Crew Program, Launch Services Program, Exploration Ground Systems, Space Launch System, Orion, Exploration Research and Technology, Human Landing System Lander Ground Operations, and Construction of Facilities. He ensures that Engineering’s workforce has the skills and experience needed to provide exceptional products and services to programmatic and project customers.

Experience

Prior to his selection as associate director, Mack served as the acting associate director of Engineering for approximately six months.

Mack joined NASA Kennedy in 1983 as a design engineer for Construction of Facilities projects. He later became the construction manager for construction of the Space Station Processing Facility and subsequently served in several project management roles for various NASA programs.

In 2002, he became chief of Engineering’s Spaceport Technology Project Management Office and went on to serve in various other leadership roles with increasing responsibilities. These included chief of the business office in the Applied Technology Directorate, deputy chief of Engineering’s Business Office, chief of Engineering’s Project Management Office, and chief of Engineering’s Business Office. He also completed detail assignments in the Commercial Crew Program, Launch Services Program, and Center Management and Operations.

In 2017, Mack began a detail assignment at NASA Headquarters in Washington, D.C., with the Office of the Chief Engineer. From 2019 to 2022, he served as the technical advisor to Kennedy’s Engineering director.

Honors

Mack has received several professional honors, including a NASA Space Flight Awareness Honoree Award, a Federal Executive Association Combined Federal Campaign Loaned Executive of the Year Award, a NASA Equal Opportunity Award, NASA Exceptional Achievement Medals, and NASA Exceptional Service Medals.

Education/Personal

He earned his Bachelor of Science in mechanical engineering in 1983 from Southern University in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, and a Master of Science in management in 1990 from Florida Institute of Technology. He enjoys spending time with family and friends.
