What is your summer internship project?

I am working with a team of 12 interns on applied mathematics for space communications. I am applying algebraic topology and tropical geometry to network optimization, in hopes of modeling network interaction in space. I am also working to understand how to simulate orbital patterns and transform flight data using math theory and computer science software.

What makes your position at NASA exciting or unique?

My NASA internship provides me with freedom to explore all of my interests, ranging from physics and math to economics. I have the opportunity to work with a large, diverse group of researchers to produce meaningful, original research in space communications. I love that my mentors have the knowledge and flexibility to support our intern research, while also building a strong group of peer support.

What are you most excited about in terms of interning for NASA?

I’m most excited about meeting professionals with decades of experience in my field. Because the internship is online, we’re able to meet so many talented scientists and collaborate with them in a casual online environment. The connections and knowledge that I gain from this internship will inspire my studies for years to come.

Why is working in a diverse environment critical to our mission?

A diverse work environment allows for a large variety of experiences and ideas to be shared in a supportive work setting. Diverse environments serve to broaden our perspective in technical and social situations, leading to the highest level of innovation and creativity within the department. These diverse work environments provide much needed representation for marginalized groups, inspiring future generations of scientists, engineers, and astronauts.
