An experimental radio-controlled model aircraft casts two unique shadows as it flies inside a Dryden hangar using two spotlights as energy sources. This phase of testing was used to develop procedures and operations for “handing off” the aircraft between different sources of power. Researchers from NASA’s Marshall Space Flight Center, Huntsville, AL, Dryden, and the University of Alabama in Huntsville have flight-demonstrated a small-scale aircraft that flies solely by means of propulsive power from an invisible, ground-based infrared laser.October 2, 2002NASA Photo / Tom Tschida› Power Beaming Project Description
