After a 10 year dialogue between NASA, the European Space Agency (ESA) and the National Space Development Agency of Japan (NASDA), the joint NASA/NASDA mission, Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission (TRMM) lifts off from Tanegashima, Japan. TRMM becomes the first NASDA satellite that is able to use the Space Network for primary communication. NASDA changed its name to the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) in 2003.
