After 45 years of service, the Merritt Island Launch Annex (MILA) was retired. MILA had tracked hundreds of launches and satellites. It has tracked every single human space flight vehicle launch since the end of the Gemini Program, including the launch of Apollo 11. When the Shuttle Program came to fruition in the early 1980’s, MILA provided the critical communications to the vehicle and crew for the first few minutes after liftoff. MILA also supported the Space Shuttles that landed at NASA’s Kennedy Space Center (KSC).
