The first in a series of servicing missions for the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) commenced. Astronauts visited HST and fixed its vision problem by replacing and installing two new devices. Four other servicing missions (February 1997, December 1999, March 2002, and May 2009) extended the longevity of the telescope by replacing outdated technology (and batteries). HST utilizes the Tracking and Data Relay Satellite (TDRS) to downlink its vast data to the scientists, who continue to make discoveries with HST to this day.
