The 64-meter (210-foot) antenna, Deep Space Station 63 (DSS-63), at the Madrid Deep Space Communications Complex (MDSCC) became operational in September 1973. Throughout the 1970s, it became apparent that upcoming missions needed an even more sensitive antenna to capture the signals from the deepest parts of our solar system. Engineers added to the existing infrastructure of the dish making the 64-meter antenna a 70-meter (230-foot) antenna in 1987.
