Growing Research Careers with Suborbital Flight Testing

Abstract
In addition to technology development, the process of suborbital flight testing presents a variety of learning opportunities for researchers to hone skills like project management, experiment design, and risk reduction. This webinar will feature two seasoned Flight Opportunities investigators – Dr. Addie Dove and Dr. Kevin Crosby – who will share their experience leveraging the program to advance their own research while also helping their students develop skills that are critical for career success, both in academia and industry. They will illustrate why cultivating student experience and career growth is important for the growing the space community, and also offer tips on effectively engaging students in projects while still meeting flight test objectives.
Flight Opportunities encourages the community to engage in these conversations, and participants are welcome to submit questions prior to the webinar to enable more directed responses. Please send questions to nasa-flightopportunities@mail.nasa.gov.

Speaker Bios
Dr. Adrienne (Addie) Dove is a planetary scientist and assistant professor in the Department of Physics at the University of Central Florida (UCF). She received her BS in Physics from the University of Missouri in 2006, and her Ph.D. in Astrophysics and Planetary Science from the University of Colorado – Boulder in 2012. She is passionate about space and space exploration (both human and robotic) and educating people about science and exploration. In July 2017, Dr. Dove was awarded the Susan Niebur Award Early Career Award by the NASA Solar System Exploration Virtual Research Institute (SSERVI) for her contributions to the science and exploration communities. Dr. Dove’s experience with Flight Opportunities began during her post-doctoral studies, and she has subsequently received multiple awards for Flight Opportunities-supported flight tests. She guides young researchers on how to effectively leverage suborbital flight tests to advance their own research endeavors.
Currently a Visiting Senior Scientist at NASA’s Kennedy Space Center, Dr. Kevin Crosby is a professor in the Physics and Astronomy Department and Computer Science Department at Carthage College. He served as Division Chair for the Division of Natural Sciences for 10 years and as Dean of the Division of Natural and Social Sciences for one year. Dr. Crosby currently directs the NASA Wisconsin Space Grant Consortium and runs the Carthage Space Sciences program. As a long-time participant with the Flight Opportunities program, he has been involved in a variety of undergraduate space science research initiatives, including suborbital flight tests across a variety of vehicle types, as well as CubeSat projects.
