The techniques described here particularly address different types of instrumentation for temperature measurements. However, these techniques, as well as the information that is acquired, can then be applied in new ways to different situations to provide additional capabilities for research and design. These capabilities may provide new forms of information or improve a measurement system.

The majority of temperature measurements are of stagnation (total) temperature and/or surface temperature. Other techniques focus on ensuring that the temperature measurements are accurate and well understood.

Thermocouples (TCs)

These are commonly used for temperature measurements and are available in a wide variety for surface or stagnation temperature measurements.

Resistance Temperature Detectors (RTDs)

These temperature sensors contain a resistor that changes resistance value as the temperature changes. They are more accurate than thermocouples.

Temperature-Sensitive Paint (TSP)

This paint is applied onto the surface of a model. Luminophore molecules in the paint, combined with proper excitation light, cause the paint to fluoresce to different levels that correspond to the temperature distribution on the surface.

Infrared Camera

This type of camera forms an image using infrared radiation rather than visible light. This can give useful pictures of the temperature distribution of a model.
