NASA Invites Media to 60th Annual Robert H. Goddard Memorial Symposium

Media are invited to meet leaders in the space community during the 60th annual Robert H. Goddard Memorial Symposium, taking place at the Kossiakoff Center on the campus of the Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory in Laurel, Maryland, from March 8 to 10. Attendees may also watch the symposium online.

Hosted by the American Astronautical Society, in conjunction with NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Maryland, the symposium convenes leaders across government, policy, industry, and academia to assess the state of space exploration while working toward a blueprint for the future.

This year’s theme, “Our Environment in Space: Challenges and Opportunities,” will focus on topics at the forefront of exploration while discussing how to best address the changing landscape in such areas as science, engineering, technology, human spaceflight, and the space workforce at large.

“The symposium is one of the most important annual events for members of the space community,” said Michelle Thaller, Goddard co-chair of the symposium planning committee. “It is a fitting opportunity to highlight where we collectively stand, while helping chart a path forward together.”

Christa Peters-Lidard, Goddard director of sciences and exploration, will serve as the keynote speaker on Wednesday, March 8. The first day will feature panels on space weather, climate action, and lunar science.

James Free, NASA associate administrator for exploration systems development, will deliver the luncheon keynote address on Thursday, March 9. Panelists will discuss planetary defense, sample returns from across the solar system, human exploration, and the future of space commercialization.

The final day of the symposium on Friday, March 10, will include a luncheon keynote by Bhavya Lal – NASA associate administrator for technology, policy, and strategy – as well as panels on the space workforce, strategic mission planning, and enabling low-cost missions. Nicola Fox, associate administrator for the NASA Science Mission Directorate, will address attendees.
