OSI Mission

Assure that the right infrastructure is available to meet NASA’s mission requirements. We accomplish this mission through effective management of assets and capabilities, enhanced institutional planning and decision-making, proactive deployment of sustainable practices, and reducing current and future infrastructure-related risks.

OSI Vision

Provide leadership to ensure NASA’s assets are mission ready and sustainable for the present and beyond.

The Office of Strategic Infrastructure (OSI), along with the other Headquarters and Center mission support organizations, supports NASA’s mission in the overarching goal to enable mission success by managing institutional risk to mission. To achieve this purpose and support the Vision mapped in the NASA Strategic Plan, OSI focuses on three primary goals to assure infrastructure assets and capabilities are available to mission as needed. These goals and related objectives focus on reducing risk to missions by using effective management strategies and operations and identifying and mitigating infrastructure risks.

  • Goal 1: Obtain mission needs by conducting joint planning early and throughout the life cycle of program and projects.
    • Ensure formal integration of institutional considerations into programs and projects from inception to completion and final asset disposition to provide more effective support to the mission.
    • Prioritize allocation of infrastructure resources to balance optimal support of mission needs with externally levied requirements.
  • Goal 2: Ensure that infrastructure, assets, and capabilities are aligned and configured to mission and available when needed.
    • Leverage and size assets, capabilities, and resources to meet mission needs, eliminate excess capacity, and scale asset performance accordingly.
    • Transition Shuttle infrastructure assets as appropriate by developing and implementing disposition plans of unneeded assets to effectively support NASA’s Vision for Space Exploration.
  • Goal 3: Implement risk mitigation and sustainability practices across the Agency’s infrastructure to prevent adverse mission impacts, protect mission resources, and enable the NASA mission to the fullest extent possible.
    • Integrate continuous risk management practices into the life-cycle management of NASA’s infrastructure to enhance mission support and sustainability.
    • Enhance mission performance and reduce life cycle costs of operations, maintenance, and disposition of infrastructure assets. This will ensure maximum funding is available to mission programs and projects through sustainability design practices and implementing new technologies.

Achieving these goals will support the overarching goal of managing institutional risk to mission. Successful implementation, though, requires careful monitoring of performance measures and outcomes and the oversight and management of related infrastructure risks. OSI is fully committed to NASA mission success, and in partnership with other Headquarters and Center organization, OSI activities will ensure the Agency achieves the Vision for Space Exploration.
