Families are invited to bring their children to NASA’s Wallops Flight Facility Visitors’ Center on Saturday, June 25 from 1-3 p.m. to tour the traveling U.S. Fleet Forces Commands’ “Stewards of the Sea: Defending Freedom. Protecting the Environment” museum exhibit and participate in marine and environmental-themed hands-on activities.

The hands-on activities will highlight some of the traveling exhibit concepts including how sound travels under water and how ocean animals communicate within this environment; the importance of recycling and why the Navy doesn’t dispose of plastic into the ocean; the role of oysters in the ecosystem and why the Navy funds restoration projects; and how Sailors identify various whale species and employ mitigation measures while training to avoid harming them.

The Stewards of the Sea traveling exhibit is a scaled-down version of the permanent exhibit on display at the Hampton Roads Naval Museum at Nauticus, the National Maritime Center in downtown Norfolk.

The traveling exhibit will remain on display at Wallops through Labor Day.
