Residents living around NASA’s Langley Research Center in Hampton, Virginia, may hear loud booming sounds and feel the vibrations of pile-driving due to construction of a new laboratory.
Construction contractor W.M. Jordan Co. of Norfolk will begin driving 70-foot-long (21.3 meters) test piles into ground at the construction site on Thursday, Feb. 23. for Langley’s new Measurement Systems Laboratory. More than 680 cast concrete piles will be needed and take about three months to install.
The contractor will install construction fencing to separate the construction areas prior to driving the concrete piles.
A study group will determine any adverse impact on research operations, adjacent facilities and subsurface utilities at NASA Langley using instrumentation to measure vibration amplitude and propagation.
“We understand and remain sensitive to the noise from this operation and will seek ways to minimize impact on the public as well as on our employees,” said Gary Stergin, Langley’s project manager for construction of the facility.
The $95-million, 175,000-square-foot (16,258 square meters) lab will be the biggest of the new facilities built so far as part of NASA Langley’s 20-year revitalization plan. The plan calls for demolition of aging structures and construction of new, energy efficient facilities and the rehab of aging buildings.
The lab will be a world-class facility for research and development of new measurement concepts, technologies, and systems that will enable NASA to achieve its mission in space exploration, science, and aeronautics.
