NASA’s Marshall Space Flight Center Supports Regional After-School Programs

NASA’s Marshall Space Flight Center, located in Huntsville, Alabama, is collaborating with six education programs in Alabama, Missouri and Tennessee to expand access to NASA content and activities.

The Marshall Center will work closely with the Boys & Girls Club of North Alabama and the American Association of University Women, both in Huntsville; the Alabama 4-H of Auburn; the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga and the Chattanooga Girls Leadership Academy, both in Tennessee; and the Saint Louis Science Center in St. Louis.

Under the guidance of Marshall’s Academic Affairs Office, these after-school programs will serve 1,800 middle school students with NASA-themed activities in science, technology, engineering and math, or the STEM fields of study. The benefits and support from the Marshall Center include professional counsel and access to free NASA educational resources and activities.

“Our collaborators offer great opportunities in their local communities that utilize innovative NASA-unique content and activities,” said Tammy Rowan, manager of the Marshall Academic Affairs Office. “Fun, interactive learning experiences are a perfect way to keep students’ minds sharp.”

In addition, Marshall team members will provide site-visits, emails or videoconferences, coordinated by the Marshall Speakers Bureau Office and/or the Academic Affairs Office. Students will benefit from team members sharing their NASA stories and academic advice.

The awarded proposals for this project target students in fourth through ninth grades, with each organization providing 30 hours of NASA activities by January 2015. Scheduled events and activities include after-school programs, Saturday sessions, camps and family science nights.

This project, through NASA’s Summer of Innovation, increases the number of organizations able to engage students, particularly those currently underrepresented in the STEM fields, in meaningful learning experiences using NASA content. These after-school programs were selected based upon a solicitation of proposals, which were reviewed and approved for conformance to pre-determined criteria.
